If you’ve searched for home improvement contractors, you’ve probably found that there are so many to choose from. However, finding the right masonry contractor can be a little more tedious and time-consuming. Often times it’s a large, expensive project that they’ll be completing, and you want to spend the time to find just the right one. There are many questions you should be asking masonry contractors before hiring one!
Is the Bid an Estimate or Fixed Price?
Every contractor works differently, which means every price is going to be different as well. Some contractors’ bids are estimates, which means your bill could be much higher than they first anticipated. There are a few unknown variables that may go on when they’re doing work to your home, which may be unavoidable, but it’s best to ask if they can give you a fixed price for what work they know they’ll have to do. Otherwise, you can try to fix or eliminate some of the potential variables of the project.
How Long Have They Been Working in the Area?
You want a contractor that works locally to ensure they have an established network in the area and a local reputation to uphold. Choosing an experienced, reputable contractor that works in your area often is a much safer choice than a contractor who’s new to the business or is planning on commuting to the job. If your masonry contractor is local, it’ll be easier for him to get to the job, especially if there’s a problem or you have questions or concerns that need to be answered in person.
Do They Subcontract Their Work?
A lot of general contractors subcontract their work. Not everyone has an HVAC expert on their team, or an electrician on call all the time, but they may have contracts with trusted experts from different companies that they may ask to do their job with them. A lot of the times the general contractor will be overseeing the subcontracted work, but you’ll want to know how involved they’ll be in the project. You want to make sure they’re going to be there on the job site as often as they said they would be to oversee the project. You’ll mostly be dealing with them, and they should be able to hold up their end of the bargain.
Do They Offer a Warranty in Writing?
A warranty gives you peace of mind, knowing you’re covered if something goes wrong. Some contractors will say anything on the job but never write it on paper. If they say they give a “lifetime warranty” make sure to get that printed on paper, should anything go wrong or deteriorate in the future.
