Here are a few frequently asked questions about flashing and roof repair:
What is flashing? Flashing is just material — usually aluminum or galvanized steel — that’s used over joints in roof and wall construction to prevent water seeping in and causing damage.
Where do I need to install flashing? Flashing needs to be installed around all joints on the roof like windows and chimneys. This includes dormer windows, skylights and vents.
Why don’t roofing shingle manufacturer’s recommend re-using roof flashing when replacing a roof? There are many reasons but the short answer is because the nails don’t always go back into the same holes they were in originally. Although many people do reuse their flashing, it is not considered “best practice.”
